People often ask me about the difference between self-confidence and self-esteem. While self-confidence and self-esteem are closely related, theyโ€™re distinct concepts. Self-confidence refers to the belief in your abilities and the assurance that you can handle specific tasks or situations effectively. It’s situational and can fluctuate based on your experiences and skills.

On the other hand, self-esteem is your overall sense of self-worth and value as a person. It’s a deeper, more stable belief in your intrinsic worthiness, irrespective of external achievements or circumstances. Building self-esteem often involves recognizing and embracing your inherent value, while self-confidence focuses on developing trust in your abilities in various domains of life. Both are essential for personal growth and well-being.

Why is self-confidence important?ย 

Confidence is the key to unlocking your potential! When you believe in your abilities, you’re more likely to tackle new challenges, seize opportunities, and navigate difficulties effectively. It’s the spark that ignites your motivation and sets you on a path to success. Confidence isn’t just about feeling good, it’s also a powerful tool for achieving your goals.

Conversely, a lack of self-confidence can cast a shadow on your life. It breeds insecurity, self-doubt, and self-consciousness. It’s that nagging feeling that makes you hesitate, retreat from opportunities, and fear failure or judgment.ย 

Here’s the catch: when you expect failure, you often invite it. So, it’s crucial to nurture your confidence.ย 

5 Exercises to build your self-confidence

Self-confidence grows in a kind of spiral pattern. Successful experiences lead to self-confidence, self-confidence leads to more successful experiences, and so on. If you can get yourself into this positive feedback loop, you can start growing your self-confidence one experience at a time. Here are 5 proven strategies to help you build your confidence:

1. Practice affirmations that challenge your inner critic

Begin by countering those negative beliefs with positive affirmations. Replace “I’m not worthy” with “I have just as much worth as anyone else.” Silence your inner critic by acknowledging your efforts and saying, “I did my best.” This self-talk rewires your brain, fostering self-acceptance.

It may not feel natural to say positive affirmations that go against what you currently feel to be true, but by practicing saying and thinking these things, you help create new pathways in your brain that grow stronger over time.

  • I am resilient, and I can handle any challenge that comes my way.
  • I believe in my abilities, and I trust my decisions.
  • I am worthy.
  • I am constantly growing and evolving.
  • I am the architect of my destiny, and I shape my reality.

2. Acknowledge your positive qualities

Itโ€™s common to spend more mental energy thinking about the qualities that you lack, leaving little time to think about the good qualities that you have. If this is something you struggle with, take a moment to list your positive qualities. Then, focus on redirecting your mental energy toward your strengths instead of dwelling on your shortcomings.

3. Affirm your strengths and abilities

Celebrate your skills and abilities.ย  For example, you might say, “I am good at problem-solvingโ€. This can help you not only feel more confident in these skills, but it may also help remind you that you were able to build skills in the past so you can build new skills again in the future.

Recognize your strengths so you can increase your confidence by engaging in situations where youโ€™ll thrive. Make a list of your strengths and see if you can find ways to use your strengths more often.

4. Know your worth

Perhaps the most important part of being confident is knowing your worth. Early messages about our worth are internalized and become the basis for our beliefs about ourselves.ย 

But, you have the power to change what you believe. To recognize your intrinsic worth, dismiss the false beliefs. Replace them with affirmations like “I am worthy.”

5. Practice self-care

Embrace self-care as an act of self-worth. Give yourself permission to take breaks, prioritize your well-being, and engage in self-care rituals. This positive self-focus will translate into more positive experiences.
